The 5 Levels of Listening (and how each one shapes your BD success)
1. Waiting to Talk
- You're crafting your reply while they speak.
- It feels efficient--but it signals impatience.
- Tip: When they finish speaking, pause for two full seconds before you respond.
2. Hearing the Words
- You're focused on what's said--but not what's meant.
- You catch facts, not the feeling behind them.
- Ask: "What's most important about that for you?" and stay quiet to hear the real answer.
3. Understanding the Message
- You connect the dots between ideas.
- You reflect back the deeper meaning.
- Summarize: "Here's what I'm hearing... tell me if I've got this right."
4. Recognizing Emotions
- You hear the tone beneath the content.
- You sense stress, excitement, doubt.
- Try: "It sounds like there's some [emotion] behind this...does that feel right?"
5. Hearing What's Unsaid
- You notice what's missing or avoided.
- You sense hidden concerns and gaps.
- Ask: "Is there something deeper driving this we haven't touched yet?"
Great listeners hear what isn't spoken, and that's exactly what BD is all about.

The deeper you listen, the more clarity you can gain.
- About their priorities.
- Their path forward.
- Their pressures.
And when you understand all that?
You're not pitching anymore.
