Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the Dutch financial sector, offering opportunities in fraud detection, credit scoring, cost reduction, and personalized customer services.

However, it introduces serious risks, including data bias, loss of explainability, privacy breaches, and dependency on non-European tech providers. Financial institutions are increasingly adopting AI for efficiency and competitive positioning, while regulators--Autoriteit Financiele Markten and DNB--emphasize the importance of responsible, ethical AI deployment within existing legal frameworks.

Current supervision remains technology-agnostic, but AI's growing complexity demands enhanced regulatory guidance and potentially new laws. The European AI Act identifies credit and insurance AI applications as "high-risk," requiring strict compliance with risk, governance, and transparency standards. Supervisory bodies will need to build technical capacity, develop AI-specific oversight methodologies, and collaborate cross-sectorally.

Achieving a balance between innovation and responsible use is essential. The report urges a proactive, harmonized European regulatory approach to ensure AI benefits financial markets without compromising consumer protection, institutional integrity, or fundamental rights.
