Better to admit you walked through the wrong door

Authors

Than spend your life in the wrong room.

One of the biggest career traps I see at the executive level is this:

Leaders who know they’re in the wrong role —

but stay anyway.

  • They stay because it’s “too soon” to leave.

  • They stay because they’re worried about their CV.

  • They stay because the comp package is good.

  • They stay because walking away feels like failure.

Time compounds.

Every month you spend in the wrong room

You’re missing opportunities in the right one.

the most successful leaders are ruthless course-correctors.

They spot when a role, a company, or even an industry is no longer serving them — and they act.

Fast.

Here are 10 smart Self-Reflection questions for executives to work with:

  1. If I were advising a close friend in my exact situation, what would I tell them to do?

Because we’re braver and clearer when giving advice to others than to ourselves.

  1. Does this role amplify my strengths or keep me constantly managing my weaknesses?

Because operating in your zone of genius creates exponential impact — firefighting your weaknesses just burns you out.

  1. What unique value am I creating here that only I could create?

Because if you’re easily replaceable, you’re probably not in the right room for long-term growth.

  1. Am I here out of ambition — or out of obligation?

Because obligation-driven careers often end with resentment and regret.

  1. Which conversations energize me, and which ones drain me — and which type dominates my calendar?

Because your calendar is your strategy. Energy is a leading indicator of fit.

  1. What would success in this role look like 3 years from now — and do I actually want that future?

Because climbing the wrong mountain faster doesn’t make it the right mountain.

  1. If the financial package stayed exactly the same, would I still choose to stay?

Because golden handcuffs feel shiny — until you notice how heavy they are.

  1. What am I sacrificing to stay here — in terms of health, relationships, reputation, or purpose?

Because hidden costs compound, and they often matter more than the paycheck.

  1. Am I growing in relevance for the future market — or just getting better at playing today’s game?

Because the skills that made you successful yesterday may not make you valuable tomorrow.

  1. If I knew I couldn’t fail, what bold move would I make next?

Because fear keeps us small — and clarity lives just beyond that fear.

Executives aren’t remembered for staying in the wrong room.

They’re remembered for having the clarity to leave and the courage to choose the right room next.
