Four principles guide ABN Asia: focus on the tech, do things with love, love our clients, and remember that money — important as it is — is never the only reason to take a deal, and never a replacement for the pride and satisfaction of work done well.
Every company has a philosophy, whether it writes it down or not. Ours fits in four lines:
- We focus on the tech.
- We do things with love.
- We love our clients.
- Money is important, but it is not everything.
These are not decorations for a slide. They are what we fall back on when a decision is genuinely hard: when a shortcut would go unnoticed, when a contract is profitable but wrong, when honesty will cost us more than silence would.
Here is what each of them means to us.
1. We focus on the tech
ABN Asia is a technology company. That is not a side note — it is the point.
Our clients come to us for what technology can actually do for their business: systems that respond in milliseconds, data they can trust, AI that works in production, platforms that stay online when tens of thousands of people depend on them at the same time.
Focus means investing in the fundamentals — engineering, architecture, security, performance, data, open source, and the discipline of testing. It means saying no to things that look impressive in a presentation but have no substance underneath. We are far more interested in a system that still works in ten years than in a demo that impresses for five minutes.
Focus also means honesty about the limits of technology. We tell clients what our technology can do — and what it cannot do yet. We would rather deliver something real than promise something spectacular.
And focus is a form of humility: technology moves fast, and the day we stop learning is the day we stop being useful.
The technology is the foundation of every promise we make. If the tech is not right, nothing else matters.
2. We do things with love
"With love" sounds unusual in an industry of deadlines, budgets and tickets. We mean it literally.
Doing things with love means caring about the craft: code that is clean and maintainable years later, tests that are written properly, documentation that tells the truth, interfaces that respect the people who use them. It means caring about the details that nobody sees and nobody asks about — because those are the details that decide whether a system survives its first year in production, and its tenth.
It also means that when we hand over our work, our name is on it, and we are proud of it.
Love, in this sense, is not softness. It is discipline. It is what makes an engineer return to a problem when the easy version is already "good enough". It is what turns a job into work that means something.
Discipline is also why we never let a project go late. A deadline we give a client is a commitment, not an estimate. We plan for risks, we raise problems early, and we deliver on the date we promised — because our clients build their own plans around that date, and we do not break the trust they place in it.
3. We love our clients
We do not see clients as transactions. We see long relationships.
So we listen before we build. We try to understand the business — the pressures, the constraints, the people who will use the system every day — before we write the first line of code.
And we stay after launch. A go-live is not the end of a project; it is the beginning of the responsibility. Systems need care: monitoring, maintenance, improvement, and honest conversations when something has to change.
Sometimes that means giving advice that reduces our own scope of work, because it is the right advice. Sometimes what a client needs is smaller than what they asked for. Sometimes the correct answer is "you do not need this yet". Sometimes the most valuable thing we can offer is a clear explanation of the problem — not another solution to sell.
That is what loving our clients looks like in practice: not a promise in a proposal, but the habit of protecting their interests as if they were our own.
4. Money is important — but it is not everything
Let us be direct: we are a business. Money matters. It pays salaries, funds research, keeps our systems running, and lets us invest in better technology and better people. Anyone who claims that money does not matter is not being honest.
But money is a means, not the purpose. And it is not the only reason we make decisions.
There is one return that no invoice can show: the feeling of work done well. Work needs to be something we are proud of and satisfied with — money does not replace that. A project can be commercially successful and still feel like a loss if we are not proud of what we delivered. Pride and satisfaction are not bonuses that arrive after payment; they are the reason the work is worth doing.
There are deals we will not take, even when they are profitable — because we cannot do them well, because they would hurt the client, or because the way they must be done conflicts with the first three principles. We may simply decline a deal because money is the only argument for taking it. When money is the only reason, it is usually the wrong reason.
Money is a result, not a goal. When we focus on the tech, do things with love, and take care of our clients, the money follows. Perhaps not always as quickly as we would like — but it follows.
Four principles, one direction
Technologies change. Markets change. Much of what we build ten years from now will look nothing like what we build today.
These four principles will not change.
They keep us honest when being honest is expensive. They keep us patient when a quick profit is available. They keep us proud of what we deliver. And they keep our clients at the center of everything we do.
Focus on the tech. Do things with love. Love our clients. Money is important — but it is never everything. And whatever we deliver must be work we are proud of — because that is one thing money cannot replace.
If that is the kind of technology partner you are looking for, we would very much like to meet you.
